VideoCull uses FFmpeg and FFprobe to generate thumbnails and metadata, so it can inspect many common video formats even when in-app playback is not available.

Built-in player

The built-in player is intended for compatible web-playable media such as:
  • .mp4
  • .webm
  • .mov
  • .mkv
  • .m4v
  • .ogv
Playback still depends on the underlying codecs supported by Chromium.

External player fallback

Legacy or unsupported formats such as the following should be opened in your default system player instead:
  • .avi
  • .wmv
  • .asf
  • .flv
  • .ts
  • .mts
  • .mpeg
Those files can still be scanned, thumbnailed, filtered, rated, and marked for deletion inside VideoCull.
If a file should work in-app but does not, open it in your external player first to check whether the media itself is damaged or the issue is player compatibility.
